Johannesburg, South Africa - Netball players from around the country will descend on the TUKS University sports grounds this weekend for the third netball Merit Tournament.
The tournament, hosted by Netball South Africa (NSA) was first held in 2007 with the aim of providing players with a competitive platform without the restrictions of the quota system. “The tournament was initiated to assess the progress of transformation in netball,” said NSA President Mimi Mthethwa. “We have realized that we have almost reached our target of 50/50 participation.”
National coach Carin Strauss said that teams would not look very different from the teams that compete in the annual Spar National Championships. “The predominantly white teams will stay that way, and so will the predominantly black teams. The difference at this tournament is that those teams have a chance of winning a medal, whereas at the National Championships, they are penalized if they don’t meet the quota.” |
