Spirits high an South African camp

Singapore, South Africa - With less than a week to go before the start of the World Netball Championships in Singapore, spirits in the South African camp are very high.

“There is a great atmosphere in the team,” said manager Marchelle Maroun. “The girls are training hard, but they are all keeping up well with the demands that are being made of them. “There are no injuries and no illnesses, and they are all just very excited about the thought of getting going in their World Championship campaign.”

President Zuma wishes the Proteas well

Tshwane, South Africa - President Jacob Zuma and Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula have assured the SPAR National Netball Team that they have the support of the nation when they leave on Tuesday for the World Netball Championships in Singapore.

President Zuma invited the team and its managers to his official residence in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon to express his personal support for the team. After being introduced to each member of the team by Captain Amanda Mynhardt, Zuma described them as the most beautiful girls in South Africa, and welcomed them to Mahlamba Ndlopfu.

Prince to umpire for World Champs

Two South Africans have been appointed to officiate at the World Netball Championships in Singapore from July 3.

Theresa Prince, the third South African to qualify as an international umpire, has been named as one of the 17 umpires at the tournament, while Tertia le Roux has been appointed one of the tournament’s technical officials.

SPAR Proteas prevail after fightback against Trinidad & Tobago

Kuilsriver - The big crowd at the Western Cape Sport School in Kuilsrivier lifted the roof after a magnificent fightback by the Spar South African netball team in the fourth quarter of their third test against Trinidad & Tobago saw them prevail by 55-47.
The Proteas finally showed resilience, composure and ability under pressure when it counted most, after a pathetic first half performance so nearly undid all the hard work from the South African victories in the first two tests. They scored 17 goals in the fourth quarter and conceded only five, proving that they can keep cool heads when the going gets tough.

Proteas Netball captain to gain experience in New Zealand

South Africa - Netball South Africa (NSA) says it will not stand in the way of the captain of the SPAR National Netball team, Amanda Mynhardt, if she wishes to go to New Zealand to gain experience, as long as she follows the correct procedures.

 

Twenty-six-year-old Mynhardt confirmed on Tuesday that she planned to travel to New Zealand, a netball powerhouse, at the end of February.  However, the defender said this did not mean she was turning her back on South Africa and the Proteas. “I just want to play more netball and gain experience, and then plough that back into netball in South Africa,” she said.

- When the SPAR South African netball team play their next international match, they will be armed with a special secret weapon – Dr. Sherylle Calder, the world-renowned specialist in visual performance skills and their effect on improved sporting performance. 

SPAR has joined forces with Netball South Africa and Dr. Sherylle Calder to work with the Proteas as they prepare for this year’s international programme. Mike Prentice, Group Marketing Executive, says that SPAR is very pleased to have Dr. Calder on board; “The Proteas proved that they have what it takes to compete with the top teams in the world at the World Netball Championships in Singapore last year. Dr. Calder’s pedigree speaks for itself and we believe it can give the Proteas the extra edge that they need.”
